When handbuilding with clay you pinch, slab, and coil. The materials needed for working with clay are a placemat, water/sponge, a needle tool, and clay. The pottery stages of clay are wet clay that is the easiest to work with to leather hard that cannot bend, but can attach with scoring and slipping. That goes to bone dry to it being fired in the kiln and become bisque which is no longer clay and after all of that you glaze your final product. Although pottery is extremely fun there are some rules to go along with the process. The first rule is soft clay cannot be attached to hard clay. The second rule is pieces of clay must be scored with a needle or brush and painted with slip to be “glued” together. The third rule is clay must not be thicker than 1” and hollow pieces must have a hole for air to escape. The fourth rule is that unnatural bending will result in cracks when drying. The fifth rule is uncovered clay is drying clay KEEP IT COVERED! The sixth and final rule is that clay shrinks as it dries. During this pottery unit I learned skills on how to sculpt clay and I created original art by using my imagination.
